Most democratic is the bedbug chappie,
Who prefers red blood to blue.
And nothing makes him quite so happy,
As to share your blood with you.
History:
Bedbug - cimex lecturlaris have been around since man inhabited caves with bats. The Greeks wrote about them in plays. They were used as medicine for snake bite and assorted maladies. In the1700’s these six legged vampires moved by ship and rail to the English colonies and Canada. They can be found anywhere man, their preferred host, lives and there is no class distinction amongst their hosts, you and me. With their exceptionally wary and cautious habits, they tax the patience and ingenuity of man with their hiding places, be it wall voids behind electrical switch plates or wood frames in mattress box springs. These insects are very cryptic-that is they don’t travel during daylight hours unless disturbed or starved. This insect has a gradual metamorphosis meaning – Egg, Young, Adult with five molting stages called instars. In order to molt a blood meal is required. The first instar is 1mm in length or the size of a poppy seed (light honey color) and adult is 4-5 mm (reddish brown). Gestation of blood meal is about 10 days. Under favourable conditions complete lifecycle 5-8 weeks. Male can fertilize several females in 24 Hr. period and there could be up to 3 or 4 generations a year. This insect doesn’t fly and spends 90% of its life in hiding.
Detection:
Early detection of these parasites can be made by the discrete bloodstains on sheets and mattresses, specks of blood-blackish dots-behind wallpaper or insect excrement at the entry to hiding places in furniture crevice and walls. An intense, sweet odor like fresh raspberries, caused by bedbug oil secretions will be noticeable in highly infested areas. Although this is evidence of recent bedbug activity, a thorough examination for live bugs is required to determine an active infestation. Once a positive ID has been made, an aggressive Integrated Pest Management strategy should be implemented.
Integrated Pest Management Control:
Education- know your enemy; cleaning in and around infested area-vacuum weekly; reduce clutter; launder linens on high heat; crack and crevice caulking; document dates and locations of insect activity. Leave pesticide application to the professional.
Preparation:
Follow IPM control methods along with empting all dresser drawers and closets-place clothes in tightly sealed bags-clothes should be placed in dryer at high heat for ½ Hr. Clean dust from surfaces. Removal of infested product from site to dumpster Note* All products removed from site should be sealed in plastic and openings sealed with duct tape. Access to baseboard area is a requirement for pesticide application. Electrical covers to be removed for wall void dust applications. Preparation is the key to successful control.
Treatment for bites:
Avoid scratching; thoroughly disinfect bite area with antiseptic soap to prevent infection; a topical cream such as cortisone or calamine can be applied; an ice pack will relieve swelling; antihistamines will reduce allergic reaction. With severe reaction consult with a doctor an oral antibiotic for infection or oral corticosteroids for allergies.
